Roosevelt May Have Died of Malaria

IIn the past it’s been generally accepted that Roosevelt’s death resulted from a blood clot that may have developed while he was in the hospital.  However, new research indicates the blood clot may have been caused by malaria.

The malarial parasite Plasmodium Falciparum uses proteins that make red blood cells sticky.  Instead of traveling through the bloodstream where they can be destroyed by the immune system, the red blood cells lump together in clots that can become fatal.  It's transmitted by the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito.

The process could take months, or years depending on the behavior of the parasites.  The Plasmodium Falciparum parasite can remain dormant in the liver for 4 years.  The Plasmodium Falciparum parasite causes the most severe case of malaria in humans.
