Emlen Roosevelt
Over time Sagamore Hill varied in size. Between 1884 and 1906 TR sold portions to his sister Anna, his Uncle James, Aunt Gracie and cousin William Emlen Roosevelt. Emlen’s home was named YellowBanks.
Cousin Emlen would take over Roosevelt and Son and was TR's financial adviser before, during and after his presidency. TR and Emlen had a close relationship as cousins. Emlen wasn’t interested in politics other than to support TR’s bids for public office. Theodore, busy politically had little time to attend to financial matters.
Emlen and his wife Christine donated land to establish the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center.
Emlen also owned the James Roosevelt estate. James was one of his father’s brother making him a first cousin of TR. He was also a prominent New York City physician. He and his wife Laura lived at Waldeck on Sagamore Hill. James died at 37 of pneumonia in Manhattan in 1898. His wife Laura died in 1945 at the age of 87.
After purchasing James Roosevelt's estate Emlen acquired nearly twice the acreage of TR.
