Seawanhaka Club
The Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club on Center Island became a popular hangout for the Roosevelts.
On July 6, 1874 Theodore Roosevelt Sr. was elected to the club joining; Cornelius Roosevelt Jr., Hilbourne L. Roosevelt, Alfred Roosevelt and James Alfred Roosevelt charter members. Emlen Roosevelt and John E. Roosevelt had joined a year earlier in 1873 and were soon joined by James “Rosey” Roosevelt of Hyde Park and Frederick Roosevelt who joined in 1875.
Three Roosevelt's became Commodore. Two of Emlen's sons Phillip and George and P. James Roosevelt a distant cousin of Theodore's. TR was a member and during his presidency he frequently used the club to hold meetings and events.
