Edith’s Loss of Smell
September 30th riding at a gallop with TR and Archie suddenly and for no apparent reason Edith's horse Pine Knot threw her from the saddle onto the macadam road in front of Cove School and was knocked unconscious. TR was unable to revive her. He stopped a passing delivery van that drove her home.
She remained comatose for 36 hours before regaining consciousness but for the next 9 days she was only lucid in intervals. When she finally revived, she had no recollection of the fall and found she had lost her sense of taste and smell.
Her head ached excruciatingly for days. TR summoned a nerve specialist and 2 nurses to watch her around the clock. It took many weeks before she was strong enough to venture outside. In time she regains her sense of taste but lost her sense of smell. She would never again be able to smell the salt air of the ocean breeze, or the aroma of fresh bread baking in the oven.
