Washington Portrait the Library

The original Washington portrait in the library is known as the “Unfinished Portrait.” It was painted by "Gilbert Stuart and dates back to 1796. The painting depicts Washington at 64, three years before his death. It served as the model for the engraving used on the one-dollar bill.
Stuart's “Unfinished Portrait” appears in all the period photographs taken while TR was alive. However, today the portrait of Washington has him wearing a military uniform. At some point the original was replaced. Below are two side by side photos that illustrate the difference. Stuart's original painting is on the left and the newer military uniformed portrait is on the right and hangs in the library today.
