Washington Portrait the Library

The original Washington portrait in the library is known as the “Unfinished Portrait.”   It was painted by Gilbert Stuart and dates back to 1796. It's considered Stuart's most notable work.  It is believed to depict George Washington at the age 64, about three years before his death.  It served as the model for the engraving used for Washington's portrait on the one-dollar bill.  

This is the portrait that appears in all the period photographs taken of the library. However, today the portrait has Washington wearing a military uniform.  At some point the original portrait was replaced. In the picture below Stuart's original painting is on the left and the newer military portrait is on the right
